We have reached the last day of 2022. It has been a year that will never forget. We lost the head of our Chambers, Mr Yousuf Mohamed SC, GOSK on the 4th of April 2022. He is recognised by the legal profession and the country as a whole as having been a formidable barrister and a true gentleman of the bar. We are reminded with fondness of his great intelligence, his excellence in advocacy and how lethal he was as a cross examiner. For his clients, he represented strength, confidence and professionalism. We all miss his sense of humour and his guidance. For the whole team at Mohamed Chambers, no words can describe the loss. Leaving 2022 behind is a bittersweet feeling.
First, a big thank you to all our clients. You have given us your continued trust and we will endeavour to continue providing you with legal advice and service of the highest standard.
Second, a big thanks you to all members of our team for the commitment and hard work shown by every one of them throughout this particularly challenging year. We have not only survived, but also managed to adapt and grow. I am please to announce that we are being joined by two new barristers at the beginning of this new year, Sweshta Jadoo and Humayrah Thug. I am convinced they will make an immediate positive impact. I am proud of each and every one of our team. The way they have gone about their work, how they pulled together and persevered when they had to, and also how they remained focused as the entire world changed around us.
I am also particularly proud to finish 2022 with a great win at the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the matter of C-Care (Mauritius) Ltd (Appellant) v Employment Relations Tribunal and 5 others (Respondents) (Mauritius). This is a second win for me at the Privy Council in 2 appearances.
This has truly been a team effort, and with this group of people we will no doubt experience a successful year ahead. Ultimately though, I wish us all a better 2023 – including our neighbours, friends, family and loved ones.
Season’s greetings and Best wishes.
Shakeel Mohamed.
(Head of Chambers)
